Councillors Chris Cunningham, Convenor of Education Services, and Jen Laydon, City Convener for Equalities and Human Rights, joined two young activists, Theo Pieczka-Garner and Charlie Mackenzie-Nash to host the launch of an LGBT Youth Scotland publication in Glasgow City Council schools.
Supporting Transgender Young People was developed based on the experiences of transgender young people and good practice approaches suggested by teachers, local authority officials, youth workers and others. It has now been endorsed by 31 organisations including 16 local authorities and the Scottish Government.
Graeme Ross, LGBT Youth Scotland’s Education Capacity Building Officer, explained key points of the guidance and gave some background information on its development to the assembled audience of teachers, social work and health care professionals. Headteachers Anne Grant and Jean Miller then spoke about the positive impact that building inclusive and supportive environments in their schools has made on their learning communities.
